Mettl Alternatives

Good Mettl alternatives are harder to find than most, because Mercer | Mettl is hard to beat for large, high-stakes exams. It has live proctors, a secure browser, dual-camera monitoring and a long list of university and government clients. It is also sold by quote, through a sales team, on a customised plan. People look for alternatives when that process is more than they need, or when they want a price they can see before a call.

What is in this guide

TunnelQuiz wrote this guide and is one of the options in it. We checked every vendor's own pricing and proctoring pages on 9 and 10 October 2026. Several of these vendors quote rather than publish prices, and the table says which.

Quick Comparison

Most enterprise proctoring vendors don't publish prices. Where that is true, the table says so.

How We Compared Them

For a Mettl replacement the questions are practical: can it watch a test closely enough for your stakes, can you start without a sales cycle, and is the price visible. We noted human proctoring separately, because only some of these tools offer it.

TunnelQuiz

TunnelQuiz is self-serve. You sign up, build a multiple-choice or written test, set the proctoring and share a link the same day. Every plan captures the candidate's whole screen every minute, logs tab switches with time away, enforces fullscreen, blocks copy and paste and detects a second display. Essential, at $34 a month billed yearly (₹1,319 plus GST in India), adds webcam snapshots, a check-in photo, AI browser-extension flags and live monitoring of the sitting.

What it doesn't have, compared with Mettl: human proctors, a lockdown browser, a phone as a second camera, photo ID or face matching, psychometric tests and coding simulators. Proctoring is automatic and you review the evidence. For a regulated certification exam, that may not be enough.

Talview

Talview is the closest like-for-like replacement for Mettl's proctoring. It offers automated AI proctoring, record-and-review with human review, live remote proctors, ID verification with face and voice matching, a secure browser and an AI interviewer called Ivy. It integrates with a long list of ATS and LMS platforms.

Pricing is unit-based and quoted, and Talview's FAQ says a typical commitment starts at about 150 to 200 candidates, with pilots of more than 10 candidates possibly charged. It suits certification bodies and large hiring programs that want Mettl-grade proctoring from a different vendor.

Wheebox (ETS)

Wheebox, part of ETS since 2023, runs large online exams for universities, employers and government bodies in India and publishes the India Skills Report. ETS describes its monitoring as identity verification, browser controls, live invigilation support and AI-assisted behavioural analysis.

There are no published plans, and wheebox.com now redirects to an ETS India page with a contact form. It is a peer of Mettl for big public exams, not a self-serve tool.

iMocha

iMocha covers much of Mettl's assessment range, with 10,000+ assessments, coding simulations that run code, image or video proctoring, a safe assessment browser and identity verification. It has moved towards enterprise skills intelligence, with Workday and SAP SuccessFactors connectors.

Like Mettl, it sells through a demo and a custom plan. Choose it if the reason you are leaving Mettl is the content or the integrations, not the sales process.

Xobin

Xobin bundles 3,400+ skill assessments, coding tests that run code in 50+ languages, AI proctoring with a lockdown browser, video assessments and an ATS. Unlike Mettl, it has a self-serve 14-day trial with full access and no card.

Prices are still by quote after you pick modules. It is a good fit for corporate hiring teams that want much of Mettl's breadth with an easier start.

Testlify

Testlify publishes its prices: Standard is $139 a month billed yearly for 100 credits a year, or $89 a month for visitors from India. That buys a 3,500+ test library and proctoring with snapshots, face and talking detection, session recording and AI-assistance detection. Live video proctoring with screen recording is $5 an attempt.

It is built for hiring, not academic exams. Unused credits expire at the end of the cycle.

TestGorilla

TestGorilla is the lightest-touch option: a 350+ test library, a free plan, and a Trust Layer that logs tab and full-screen changes and blocks known AI agents rather than using webcams. ID verification is on Plus.

For a Mettl user it is a step down in proctoring, by design. It makes sense for early-stage hiring screens where candidate experience matters more than lockdown.

Which One Should You Choose?

It comes down to the stakes of the test and how you want to buy:

  • Certification or regulated exams that need human proctors: Talview or Wheebox
  • Enterprise hiring with integrations, bought through procurement: iMocha or Xobin
  • Hiring tests with a library and a published price: Testlify or TestGorilla
  • Self-serve proctored tests on your own questions, priced in rupees: TunnelQuiz

If you are moving a high-stakes exam, run a pilot on real candidates first and check how the new tool handles a dropped connection mid-test. That is where proctoring tools differ most and demos say least.

Questions, answered

Mettl doesn't publish prices. Its pricing page offers a customised plan for your organisation, a quote form and a sales number. You will need a quote.

If what you need is a proctored test without a sales cycle, with evidence of what happened, TunnelQuiz captures the whole screen on every plan and adds webcam snapshots and live monitoring from Essential. Try it on the free plan with 50 credits a month.

  • Free plan, 50 credits a month
